The Life Institute has said that it has "serious concerns"' with an expert group on abortion established by the Irish government following revelations that at least three members of group have been linked to abortion advocacy and to a drive to legalise embryo research.
The expert group was established to advise the government on Ireland's abortion laws following the 2010 ruling in the European Court which claimed the Irish Constitution allowed for abortion because of the 1992 X case.

"Today we got confirmation that a senior counsel who has been appointed to the expert committee - Mary O'Toole - acted to establish a 'right' to abortion in the infamous X case in 1992," said Niamh Uí Bhriain of the Life Institute. The X case was used in an attempt to overturn Ireland's pro-life constitutional provisions and introduce abortion.
"The government has also appointed Dr Deirdre Madden, a UCC law lecturer, to the group. Madden previously wrote that "there are very strong reasons for believing the embryo is not yet a person. Then the group contains general practitioner Ailish Ní Riain who has written guidelines describing unborn children as 'contents of the uterus' and insisting that doctors should assist in referring mothers for abortion."
Ms Uí Bhriain said that the largest party in government, Fine Gael, had made an election promise not to legalise abortion, and that they could not now rely on a quango to overturn that promise.
"Unfortunately, we've seen that committees like this have been used in the past to carry out a pre-ordained anti-life agenda, such as the Commission on Assisted Human Reproduction which was stacked 20:1 against the right-to-life," said the Life Institute spokeswoman. "We're writing to an Taoiseach, Enda Kenny to tell him that there are three key facts that the government's expert group on abortion cannot ignore. We also point out that at least three of the appointments give rise to serious concerns about the independence and impartiality of the expert group". "
She said the three key facts that the expert group on abortion could not ignore were:
- Abortion is never medically necessary. Expert testimony has already been given to a government committee on this issue, where leading Irish experts confirmed that interventions for conditions such as ectopic pregnancy and cancer were not considered abortion by medical professionals since the intention was never to harm the child.
- The European Court ruling places Ireland under no obligation to legalise abortion since the Irish Constitution confirms that it is the people, being sovereign, who will decide such matters. Successive opinion polls show that Ireland's ban on abortion enjoys the support of the majority of the people.
- According to the United Nations, Ireland, without recourse to abortion, is the safest place in the world for a mother to have a baby. The expert group should also recognise the undeniable scientific evidence which shows abortion produces negative mental outcomes for women.
Notes to the Reader
The Expert Group will be chaired by Mr Justice Seán Ryan and has to report back to Government within six months with options on how to implement the judgment of the European Court.

Absolutely, outrageous. In fact, GUBU!!

Our reading of this "expert group" is that it is there with a mission to draft an amendment to the Offences Against The Person Act; with mumbled assurances that all possible objections by the great unwashed pro-life activists have all been patiently considered, and respectfully dismissed, by learned medical doctors and lawyers who, ostensibly, know better. But, hey, this is NOT a legal-medical issue. The issue is political SUBSIDIARITY: and it is vitally important because of the clear and present danger to the right to life of the unborn. The principle of 'horses for courses' usually operates whenever choosing personnel for a mission. One notes that not one of the "experts" in this group, as far as one knows, is an expert on the European Court and its jurisdiction, or, on how the principle of subsidiarity is supposed to protect Ireland, and the Irish, from its imperious predations. Accordingly, one may assume that our government (or whoever does its thinking for it) is NOT into subsidiarity; and is simply bent on the legalisation of social abortion - as required by the Labour Party. Ergo, we've got to get feet on the street on Saint Valentine's Day to protect the unborn from the Atheists. Bí ann gan teip!

Just shows the contempt in which Fine Gael hold the electorate he makes promises to. He needs to hear the voice of the people.
Seán on Jan 16, 2012 6:39pm
The make up of the committee is weak. Fine Gael's history on this issue is not inspiring (at least to me). I hope that they have more sense than to go down the road other countries have travelled.

What can we do?
mairead scannell on Jan 16, 2012 11:26pm
We need to pray, pray, pray to the Holy Spirit to inform this quango which is right and which is wrong.with this set up it is our only hope the pre-born will be saved.
Mary Coleman on Jan 16, 2012 11:56pm
I agree with Mairead above, sincere prayer to the Holy Spirit to enlighten the Committee and to Mary, Our Blessed Mother, mother of the living. I am don't know what to do in practical terms but am open to all suggestions.

Folks i think you're overly concerned and thinking the worst. Three members of 15, are questionable. I'd understand if all of them were.
Daniel on Jan 17, 2012 8:58am
I don't know Kevin, I know there is one pro-life advocate on the expert group (there are 14 imembers ncluding the chairman) but it looks like three pro-abort plus another I personally think is not good so its not breaking down well so far. What we need to do now is engage the public amd YD are very good at that thank God.
Adrian on Jan 17, 2012 11:48am
What can you expect from FG and Labour. It'll come down to pressure and public opinion alright
David on Jan 17, 2012 7:52pm
Please God, with all that happening in the world and the coming chaos. The anti-life agenda of some will not come to fruition. Pray for them to have mercy on the unborn.
Martin on Jan 17, 2012 9:16pm
Pray with sincerity but act also...write to yout T.D.'s,write to the papers, call into phone in shows on TV and radio. Let voices for the unborn be heard.
Niamh on Jan 19, 2012 11:35am
We'll be posting an update on this soon folks, another member also has a history of supporting abortion.

"Contents of the Uterus"??? What a vile description of the helpless baby in the womb!
Aquinas proved that there is a God using ONLY science and philosophy. These so-called professionals lack humanity and knowledge. They are also profound hypocrites in that they take all the great things of life for themselves while they deny another. One word: Hypocrites!!!
