With just weeks to go before the country goes to the polls, Youth Defence has launched a national 'Ask the Question' campaign urging voters to seek pro-life guarantees from their local candidates. Spokeswoman Rebecca Roughneen said that the group had already got a 'major push' underway to ensure key voter sections were informed of the need to make the protection of life a key issue in the election.

"As Youth Defence's new leaflet points out, voters need to get a guarantee from candidates that they will not introduce abortion," said Ms Roughneen. "It's not enough to fob voters off with non-committal answers; after the ABC ruling in the European Court, voters need a guarantee that candidates will uphold our ban on abortion." The leaflet can be viewed here: ttp://www.youthdefence.ie/campaigns/election-2011-ask-the-question/
It is, of course, the ruling in the ABC case that has placed abortion on the agenda for Election 2011. As Youth Defence notes, The Labour Party has been very clear on their support of legalized abortion for quite some time. Eamon Gilmore of the Labour party recently argued for the legislation of abortion on demand on RTE' News at One (Hear the interview here: http://www.rte.ie/news/news1pm/player.html?20110104,2879758,2879758,flash,257).
Fianna Fáil, the Greens, Fine Gael and Sinn Féin have also been extremely cagey about upholding our ban on abortion. It is interesting to note, however, that Labour's vote has dropped by some 16% since they openly declared they would act on the ABC case ruling and move to attack Ireland's pro-life ethos, without consulting the people. It remains to be seen as to what the outcome of the election will be and what that will mean for the right-to-life of the unborn child.
Now, with the election fast approaching, most of the political parties are trying to gloss over the issue of abortion. Even Labour, having placated their pro-abortion supporters, are now significantly trying to side-line their own policy. It's not mentioned on their election literature and it doesn't appear on their website. This is social change by stealth of course, where pro-abortion campaigners hope to push through abortion by getting elected on a platform that doesn't mention the issue.
"Our 'Ask the Question' campaign is more crucial to the pro-life lobby than ever before. This campaign uses a series of outlets to keep the issue of abortion on the mind of voters across the country prior to casting their vote and offers ways to make sure that local politicians know where voters stand on this issue.," said Ms Roughnen.
Youth Defence has written directly to over 20,000 people throughout the country this week, enclosing the 'Ask the Question' leaflet and they also plan a series of information blitzes as the election heats up and it gets closer to voting day.
"We're in the process of organising public stalls with voter information, so please call us if you're willing to help out in your area with any of these. We need to challenge voters to speak up for life and ask where their politicians stand on abortion, whenever and wherever they come in contact with a political candidate," said Campaign Director Íde Nic Mhathúna.
"We've we printed a sticker that clearly states "I Vote Pro-Life". This sticker can be placed on car bumpers or front doors, to help grow the pro-life message and to let politicians know exactly where you stand on the issue. We're also putting a major emphasis on getting the pro-life vote out."
Youth Defence and the Life Institute have also compiled a list of addresses, email addresses, and phone numbers for all of the candidates, to assist people to contact their local candidates, if they don't have the opportunity to meet with them. It's available on their websites or you can call the Life House for assistance on 01 8730463 or 01 8730465, and they'd be delighted to help.
Obviously it goes without saying that if a pro-life candidate is standing in your area, please give them your first preference vote.
Lastly, we've also written to all the political parties and to independent candidates and asked them to confirm that they will:
- Maintain Ireland's ban on abortion, since this position protects the life of every unborn child while allowing all medical treatments necessary to protect mother's lives.
- Uphold the right of the Irish people to decide on abortion without foreign interference.
- Ensure that any research involving the destruction of the human embryo should be outlawed.
We will be posting their responses on our website as the campaign progresses.
We're asking you to ask your politicians where they stand on abortion and spread the word by asking at least three friends or family members to do the same. We need politicians to hear pro-life concerns, so it is crucial that you get involved in this way.
This recession is hitting the country hard, but we can't let that be used by powerful and wealthy pro-abortion campaigners who are trying to use the European Court to foist abortion on us. Let's speak up in Election 2011.

I just don't accept anything, guarantees or otherwise, from politicians or canvassers on the doorstep!
We should demand "guarantees" in writing from their party's headquarters- ideally signed by the party leader.
Joe on Feb 4, 2011 7:35pm
if everyone gets three people to do this it would have a big impact. Good initiative
Maura McCaughey on Feb 4, 2011 9:40pm
I agree with James Maher - they will say anything at the doorstep- it would be better in writing.
Patrick on Feb 5, 2011 10:33am
Why would you ask a question when you know the answer, killing Irish people,is accepted practice by the political parties.
padraig on Feb 5, 2011 12:40pm
Our youth are hated by the politicians, killing their brothers and sisters in the most horrific manner, is their common agenda. Evil people have taken over the political parties, our youth need to know the truth.

Thank you for the information. I'm surprised i haven't heard one mention about abortion as an election issue not even on the radio. I would encourage people to phone their local radio stations and try to raise awareness on the abortion issue and how Labour have already stated they will bring it in to Ireland. They are ignoring a huge issue, i know the economy is dire but there are a lot of people in the country who would put pro-life as the number one issue. I'm one of them, God Bless.
Catherine on Feb 5, 2011 7:59pm
Whether they mean what they say or not, its great for the candidates to hear voters demanding a guarantee. Joseph, you can tell them that you'll be telling all 58 members of your family what their response was!
great leaflet by the way.

i have just listened to eamonn gilmore's interview on radio. I thought the language he was using was very pro choice, who has been advising him, has he educated himself on both sides of the issue, if he had he would realise NEVER in Ireland has a woman been refused medical treatment because she was pregnant, sometimes a baby may sadly be lost due to necessary treatment to save the life of the mother, this has always been the case. It should be pointed out to eamonn gilmore that an abortion does not cure any illness.
I also think by mentioning the European Court of Human Rights he thinks he's being honourable, someone tell him they don't recognise the rights of the unborn child. His comment should be used to open up this debate.

We have e-mailed candidates in our Sourth Kerry constituency with the following, but as yet not even an acknowledgement.
Dear Election candidate
Together as voting family members we are as yet undecided as to how we will distribute our preferences later this month.
So far we have had two election visits: from representatives of Michael Healy-Rea and from Brendan Griffin, who we missed because we were out. We are especially pleased with Brendan Griffin's commitment to a 50% salary cut and we hope that this might extend to expenses.
Before we make our final choices we would like to know more about your values, policies and plans in respect of the following:
COMBATING POVERTY and preferential option for the poor (in this respect we like some Labour policies)
HEALTH - as a basic human right (here we have some sympathy with what we perceive to be the Fine Gael plan)
REFERENDUM ON RIGHTS OF THE CHILD - vis-a-vis the family? (we have some misgivings about the O'Rourke proposals/wording)
DEVELOPMENT AID - a commitment to continue the present government's fine reputation
IMMIGRATION/REFUGEES - we feel that there is room for modest reform especially when so many young Irish people are being forced to emigrate
EMIGRATION (in the 60s two of us had to seek careers in UK, we had hoped that this era had passed)
PRO-LIFE/ABORTION (we are opposed at what we perceive to be the Labour approach)
MARRIAGE/CIVIL PARNERSHIP (we do not think that recent governments have given sufficient respect for family life)
DENOMINATIONAL SCHOOLS (here again we are concerned at some Labour Party pronouncements)
RESTORATIVE JUSTICE (we are not in favour of sending so many offenders to prisons where they learn to become better criminals)
GENDER EQUALITY (we are concerned that there are so few female candidates and want to know how this will be addressed)
SUBSIDIARITY/CRONYISM etc (we think that there are too many "jobs for the boys" and that TDs do the work of neutered local councils/councillors0
SAVING THE PLANET (eg. we are concerned at the killing/poisoning of eagles in our area)
Sincerely
Alan Whelan

I saw the Independent write that a Youth Defence member asked about abortion at a Wicklow meeting for an independent candidate. Good stuff. Something similar was in the paper in Arklow and I know that someone asked Enda kenny this in front of the camera's in galway. keep it up!

I have a story from a magazine, about the life of a mother with cancer, but she choose to have her baby, and now she's doing well.
Are Sinn Fein for abortion?
abortion in my country on Feb 7, 2011 7:44pm
iam really sorry to announce to you that abortion has being legalized in my country by a presidential order, as a result youth are now dies a randomly just because every local or half drop out nurse as they call themselves turns to open a small pharmacy, which the act is done behind it , since they are cheaper than the D & C , thus causing majority of life lost either the baby or the mother (15-18year) . i was thinking i cant help this youths by passing a massage to them either by tape or through leaflets which will in turn help them and as well help the entire community, sir/madam , the dieing rate is now rampant , God help us.
hoping to hear from you soon, my email is nchifen@yahoo.com or call00237 77 23 32 89

LABOUR will be the main Party to demand the death penalty for thousands of Irish babies.Their evil policies must be exposed. Thank GOD for Youth Defence REJECT EVIL LABOUR
TOMAS on Feb 7, 2011 9:07pm
Dead babies can't vote. The Irish people are the only ones who can save our children from the horrific murder attack being planned by the evil Labour Party. Every pro-life voter has a duty to reject the Labour Party
marie lynch on Feb 8, 2011 12:02am
myself and a friend approached an independent candidate outside mass last saturday night from Blarney, our only question to him was where did he stand on the pro life issue. He guaranteed us that he is pro life and he would always stand up for pro life issues.
Keith on Feb 8, 2011 6:10pm
David Quinn was tweeting yesterday, saying that he was surprised that so many pro-lifers hadn't a clue about Labour's position on abortion. From now until election day people need to be informed. Out of all the parties Labour is the worst party to vote for, that is, of course, if you're pro-life.
mary on Feb 8, 2011 8:19pm
Congratulations to youth defence picket on the labour party, the YD action exposes the real policy of this evil party which is death, distruction and depression for Irish people
sean o connell on Feb 8, 2011 8:37pm
i agree with Patrick, the Labour party are the most trenchant abortionists of all
mick walsh on Feb 8, 2011 11:52pm
Gilmore wants the Irish worker to compete with workers in China and Russia, suppose that would create full employment at 1 to 2 euro an hour, or maybe less, how far off were Coir posters on new minimum wage? They also want the Russian and Chinese abortion laws for Ireland. This "evil" party, as other contributors title them really want us crucified.
Lisa on Feb 9, 2011 2:44pm
Its a good idea to have the pro-life petition at your front door so when a candiate states that they are pro-life then they should not have a problem signing the petition when asked to do so. It calls their bluff plus makes them aware of how serious this issue is to us the Irish people. I suggest we all try this approach. Great work youth Defence.
