The Irish Examiner has reported that four Labour TDs may break ranks on the proposed abortion bill.
Colm Keaveney, the Tuam-based Labour TD, caused consternation in the party when he wrote that he could not support the Bill.
Keaveney is not seen as being part of the 'inner circle' of former Worker's Party members now running Labour, which includes leader Eamon Gilmore.

Now Gilmore, the Examiner says, is braced for a bigger-than-expected Labour rebellion over the X case legislation.
"Up to four Labour TDs could break ranks and defy the party whip on the issue," the paper reports.
"Despite Labour fighting the last general election on a pledge to legislate for the X case, the lack of a time limit for terminations under the proposed law is causing concern for a number of backbenchers."
"Voting against party policy would lead to TDs being expelled from the parliamentary party."
"This would prove a major headache for Mr Gilmore, as he has already seen five of his deputies either resign the whip in protest at his leadership, or thrown out for voting against Government legislation."
"If four TDs oppose the legislation, that would leave nine TDs outside the whip — a quarter of the Labour total elected in 2011."
"The threatened revolt explains why Mr Gilmore is so keen to avoid a formal Dáil vote on the issue."
To force a vote on the issue, 10 or more Dáil deputies must demand it when the legislation is expected before the Oireachtas in June and July.
The Coalition had hoped to avoid rebellions by pushing the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill through on the nod as it is backed by Sinn Féin and almost all of the Independent TDs. However, Fianna Fáil’s position has thrown this strategy into doubt.
FF leader Micheál Martin was forced to allow his TDs a free vote on the issue after finance spokesman Michael McGrath pushed for the loosening of party discipline on the matter.
Galway TD Colm Keaveney, who remains chairman of the Labour Party despite losing the whip after voting against Budget cuts to child allowance, has led calls opposing the legislation due to the lack of a time limit on when terminations can be carried out.
Anti-legislation TDs from across the Dáil have also expressed concern about the inclusion of suicidal risk as grounds for a termination.

the only TDs with any honour are those who vote against the FG/Labour Abortion bill. A free vote now and stop Kenny bullying elected TDs into voting abortion into Irish law. Kenny should now be kicked out of office for introducing abortion, at the bidding of European courts, pro abortion activists and their international backers. Punish Labour and FG at local elections.

Its heartning to know that one government party is treating its members as adults. Well done Michael Martin.

you either vote for abortion or you don't. Prolife party activists should now tell their leadership that they will resign from membership, if FG/Labour pro aborts bully this abortion bill thru.
There should be a free vote on abortion bill in all parties. Full credit to Fianna Fail for allowing one.
write, text, email your TDs (all parties) too insist on a free vote, and oppose abortion.
Note how media are using the ridiculous sideshow of the "Seanad-abolish?" debate to distract from, and stifle opposition to the Abortion Bill.

What use are fact-finding inquiries when they only lead our to leaders to their pre-determined conclusions regarding abortion legislation?
Does it really matter at all what psychiatrists say? Or head doctors?
By the way knock Catholics all you want -- at least Aquinas took great pains to provide his opponent's positions. Not so our legislators. Are there any St. Thomas More's among them?

I hope it doesn't come to pass, but...
Maybe soon the Irish Times, RTE and the legislators can celebrate(???) infanticide and the culture of death that they have eagerly sought. How sick is that? A baby? Public enemy number one? Of course, these same people will go on enjoying all that life has to offer. Hypocritical?

Why has the Doctors, Nurses medical professionals set back in silence when they should be protesting outside Hospitals and not allow themselves to be ordered by the State to be abortionists which is murder of the many unborn children on death row if this abortion kill bill pending
Is this a Democracy???? on Jun 18, 2013 7:37pm
Is this a democracy? ??Politicians being threatened if they disagree with abortion and face being penalised professionally???? Seems more like a communist regime!

The leader Enda Kenny is corrupted and greedy with the mess he made of economy and massive debt that he failed to argue foe debt forgiveness or default instead he forced citizens to carry debt that i not ours when it was greedy banks and bond holders who gamble and losted he rewarded them and has stooped lower now to facilitate the muti million international abortion groups . He has no mandate from the citizens for abortion, and he broke every single promise including not to legislate for abortion, material things, money and power.
