The biggest pro-life rally ever seen in Ireland has heard that the abortion bill should be put to the people in a referendum under Article 27 of the Constitution.
Fine Gael were also warned that 'a new political alternative' would emerge if the right of the people to vote was denied on the issue.
Up to 60,000 people marched from Parnell Square bringing Dublin to a standstill as the colourful Rally passed down O'Connell Street and made it's way to Leinster House where speakers including the democracy campaigner Declan Ganley challenged Enda Kenny to put the abortion bill to the people in a referendum. The crowd held placards and banners calling on the government to 'Let Us Vote'.
"Let those Senators and TDs use the power granted to them under article 27 of our constitution to let the people speak on this bill," Declan Ganley told the crowd to sustained applause. "Let us vote. Let us pass judgement on Enda Kenny’s abortion bill in a referendum. He says his book is the constitution.
Well use it, Taoiseach. He says he trusts the people. Well prove it, Taoiseach. He says this is a matter of grave concern to the public. Well ask them, Taoiseach. "
Niamh Uí Bhriain of the Life Institute added that: "If you refuse, Taoiseach, to let the people vote, then the people will be heard. 100,000 people have already signed the pro-life pledge, 100,000 will seek to build a new political alternative, 100,000 will remember Taoiseach, that if you ram through this law, you are the abortion Taoiseach and Fine Gael is the abortion party, and they will seek an alternative which protects both mother and baby. "
Fine Gael, she said, had now awoken a sleeping giant, that would work night and day to build an alternative to political parties who broke their promises and betrayed their principles.
Dr Eoghan de Faoite of Youth Defence said the Rally Committee was "absolutely delighted with the huge turnout" and that "there was a huge momentum building to let the people vote on the Bill using Article 27 of the Constitution."
"This initiative came from within Fine Gael itself and is also being promoted by the former Labour TD Colm Keaveney, so it's clear that the desire to let the people vote has support across the parties," he said. "What is Enda Kenny afraid of? "
The Rally also heard from Bernadette Smyth of Precious Life who said that the measure would impact on the whole island of Ireland and was out of step with the majority of people in the north of Ireland. "The All Party Pro-Life Group from Stormont is represented here today, since this is a matter for All-Ireland, as we stand together against abortion," she said.
Tracy Harkin told the Rally that "almost 7 years ago my husband Tom and I were told our baby girl Kathleen Rose was diagnosed with a condition called trisomy 13, a condition sometimes described as being 'incompatible with life'."
"Well, Kathleen Rose is with us here today. She is not incompatible with life: she is the love of our lives," she said to rapturous applause.
Bands, face-painting, family fun and music gave a carnival-like atmosphere to the Rally but the speeches at Leinster House focused on the consequences for Fine Gael if the Bill is made law without consulting the people.
Close to 100,000 pledges have been signed by voters saying they will never vote for Fine Gael again because of the legislation. Niamh Ui Bhriain said that the time was "ripe for a new political alternative which would not betray serious electoral promises on matters of life and death".
Before the Rally for Life on Saturday, Archbishops Diarmuid and Eamon Martin celebrated Mass in St. Savior's Church, Dominick St at 12.30pm. The Rally leaves Parnell Square for Leinster House at 2pm.

Thanks be to Almighty God for the overwhelming support for the Rally For Life today. Not a cloud in the sky, God Blessed the good pro-life people of ireland this day as we in our tens of thousands, took to the streets of our Capital city to demonstrate against the attempt by the absolutely contemptuous Mr kenny et al. to ride roughshod over the law of God, the will of the Irish people, over the Irish Constitution, over justice and democracy. Outrageous, Orwellian, unjustified and unconstitutional. The law of God has prevailed over our nation, has done and will do. A land of Saints and Scholars. Not to be shamed by a couple of people in the Dail, who believe they do not answer to the Irish people, nor to God, our Loving Father, who gives life to us all. Thou shall not kill, Mr kenny! Don't ENDA life, Mr kenny.

Legally arguable they are too late. We must call their bluff and puff as dictators of our people to control a Nanny State.

Way to go!! Since when is death ever a remedy???
It is supremely hypocritical to deny another the right to life after you've been given life
Brendan on Jul 11, 2013 11:09am
A committee at the UN is demanding that the Church answer "again" for child abuse cases. Many, even in Ireland, think this is horrible and they should answer. But I have a question:
It's not okay to abuse kids (we all agree!!) but somehow it is okay to terminate these kids lives via abortion???
Does anyone in these western governments see their own hypocrisy? Do they know how ridiculous they look to us that believe in a culture of life?????

Many Irish politicians are gutless and with out principles on the dangerous abortion bill by FG/Lab Coalition Government.
THIS BILL IS UNFIT FOR PURPOSE SHOULD BE SCRAPPED
The abortion bill is an human rights issue is legalising murder of targeted unborn babies up to birth
Joan OHare on Jul 11, 2013 4:34pm
Thank you Youth Defense for all you done so professional defending life and death issues.
The situation with dictator Enda Kenny is that the abortion bill is a about legalising murder of the targeted unborn babies, stripping all protection for life.
It will not further the case getting too bogged down with Religions for anyone, The bill is concern for all faiths and none the real issues I believe is to challenge the bill as an Human Rights and constitutional issue
The people must have a vote on the bill
IRISH CITIZENS CONCERNS on Jul 11, 2013 4:58pm
PRESIDENT OF IRELAND D HIGGINS JOB IS TO ACT FOR THE PEOPLE AND HE MUST NOT SIGN THE DANGEROUS ABORTION BILL OR INSHINE INTO OUR CONSTITUTION DIRECT INTENTIONAL MURDER OF UNBORN BABIES TARGETED UP TO TO BIRTH, SUICIDE INTENT GROUNDS FOR ABORTION INHUMANE LEGISLATION MUST BE REFERRED TO IRISH SUPREME COURT.
THE PEOPLE MUST HAVE A REFERENDUM AND VOTE ON THE BILL. ABORTION IS NEVER ANY TREATMENT FOR MOTHERS, IT DAMAGES THEM AND CAUSES BRAIN DAMAGES AND KILLS UNBORN BABIES

Great to have you back!
Roberta on Jul 12, 2013 1:25am
Every choice we make comes with consequences.
Unfortunately we'll all see first hand now the opposite of equal rights for all. Now for the first time our most defenseless Irish citizens will have no protection. While our government officials will continue to enjoy nice pensions, great Dublin parties, and many, many more birthday parties...
While the pre-born will not even get the courtesy of a FIRST birthday.
Oh yes, and the courts have now ENSHRINED unequal protections by their vacant stupidity. Now for the first time some peoples' live matter more than others. Wonder what that will do to the ever burgeoning family court dockets.
They're too smart by half!!!

Abortion dangerous bill is worse day for Ireland. We will go to Supreme Court. i note that Dana Rosemary Scallon warned that proposed decriminalization of abortion by the Irish Government abortion bill 2013 and abandonment of the only Statue Law protecting life from moment of existence 1861 Act Offenses against the person Act 58/and59 had being clearly identified for removal and open the door to abortion as a Human Right
1861 Act offenses against the person Act enshrined by the Irish Government contained the Health Act 1979 Article 10, nothing in this Act shall be constructed as Authorization A obtaining of abortion B the doing of which is prohibited by section 58 or 59 offenses against the person Act 1861which prohibits administration of drugs or instruments to procure abortion C the sale imports into State manufacture advertisement or display of abortifacients. Dr Rhona Mahona had said it was a barrier to women 1861 Act and the Health Act 1979 and agreed with opinion of European Court of human Rights,
We know we have our own Irish Human Rights do not legally have to obey EHR because Irish politicians and people who are Sovereign have rights to have freedom of their convictions and our own opinions. Article 10 of European Conventions on Human Rights. and Article 40.6. -1 of the Irish Constitution. Our State guarantees liberty to freedom of expression to proposed abortion bill 2013.
We know this was unfairly denied to us and TDs by Enda Kenny dictatorship Government. Dana says that the Irish Constitution states its preamble.

The people did vote in three referenda after the X Case and again in 2002.
the right to terminate a pregnancy has been legal in Ireland since X Case, the time has come to extend that right beyond it's current limited scope!

It's a sad day for democracy when tens of thousands of pro-life marchers appear to make no impression on the Taoiseach. Still, well done Youth Defence and all decent pro-life people who participated. Events like this national 'Rally for Life' will ensure that history will record this Government's callous attitude, how Fine Gael went against its own promise to not introduce abortion and ignored best medical and psychiatric advice not to introduce abortion as a treatment for suicidal ideation. When Enda (the abortion Taoiseach) and his government is consigned to the pages of history, their bloody legacy will not be forgotten, nor will their insincerity and heavy-handedness to achieve that legacy.
Joan on Jul 18, 2013 8:00am
Tom Loane your comment is of confusion, there are different interpretations by legal experts on x case and again 2002 that is facts. There also is an human rights issue for unborn that would be targeted right up to birth MURDERED is correct name for abortion or fancy name termination
The 5th Commandment Thu shall not kill. Also a breach of our Constitution
