This week, the Irish media, led by RTÉ and the Irish Independent, have used wildly exaggerated figures to push abortion. When challenged, they refused to correct the misreporting, and confirmed that they are willing to use the estimates of abortion campaigners although the real numbers are easily available.
On Monday's Prime Time programme, Miriam O'Callaghan opened a discussion on aborting babies with foetal abnormalities by repeating claims that about 1,500 such cases are diagnosed in Ireland each year, and that an estimated 80% of those (or some 1,200 pregnancies) end in abortion in Britain.
We wrote to Prime Time the following morning to point out that official records from the British Department of Health show that estimation to be wildly incorrect.

Research shows that there are approximately 700 diagnoses of serious or fatal abnormalities made each year in Ireland. (The figure of 1500 quoted by Prime Time includes all anomalies, including minor ones.)
The reality is that only an estimated 10% of Irish parents - in only 36 cases in 2011 for example - go to Britain for an abortion because their baby had a serious or fatal anomaly.
At least 90% of Irish parents choose to continue to continue with the pregnancy and to spend every moment they can with their child.
We know this because the records kept by the British Department of Health not only record all Ground E abortions on Irish women, but also record the condition diagnosed, and separate out conditions such as anencephaly, Trisomy 18 (Edwards Syndrome), Patau's Syndrome etc.
They show that the claim of 1,200 abortions on the grounds of fetal abnormalities is an absolutely gross overstatement, by a factor of 30 or more.
As you can see from the Table released by the British Department of Health below, in 2011 a total of 51 abortions were carried out on Irish women for reasons of disability - including Down Syndrome and Spina Bifida, which are not fatal abnormalities at all. When we narrow it down to fatal or life limiting disorders then we see that the total is 36 abortions.
In 2011, for example, 8 babies with anencephaly being carried by Irish women were aborted, 7 with Edwards Syndrome, and 7 with Patau's Syndrome. In 2010, the number was higher; in 2009, it was lower.
When we sent this evidence to Prime Time they told us that: "The Termination for Medical Reasons group, who cite these statistics, work specifically with women in these circumstances and they are the ones giving an estimate of 80 per cent who choose to end that pregnancy in an abortion in the UK or elsewhere."
But Termination for Medical Reasons is a lobby group seeking changes to the law. RTÉ, as a publicly funded body, are obliged to verify claims, not to simply repeat them as fact.
The facts are contained in the data from the British Department of Health (below), but since when did RTÉ ever let facts get in the way of some abortion spin. Mothers and babies deserve better.

This is disgraceful, RTE should not be able to get away with using those false figures. Cant this be brought to public attention via other media?
Elizabeth McCartney on May 31, 2013 8:11pm
Nothing new here then, only more of RTE's biased reporting in favour of the liberal agenda. In the interests of clarity and freedom of information why won't RTE show an actual abortion? Then again RTE don't do 'fair play' or unbiased reporting do they?

So what's your answer in cases of non-viability? Question the numbers or let these families choose to terminate at home?

When people finally wake up and realize that the most "sacred" of the creeds that abortion on demand people opperate under is a "the end justifies the means." Any means including BLATANT lies. What ever has to be said tol get abortion into Ireland will be used, the truth be damned.

I have emailed the Late Late Show, a long time ago, and asked them to allow some women on the show who have got a fatal diagnosis and carried their babies full term, they had previously had three women on the show who had gone to the UK for abortions, but sadly I didn't even get an acknowledgement, so they are prepared to continue with the general RTE bias and don't seem to care at all about the truth. Feels like trying to chip away the Rock of Gibraltar.

The media are heading for the rocks. Please put a stop to the murder machine immediately. URGENT: Time is running out for the innocents. Stand up for the unborn babies now. Amen.

Nothing new in RTE's bias but very annoying that the public not given the truth. When you think about Fr. Reynolds you would think they would have learned a lesson and be more careful to ensure what they say is right. We need to pray much more for them and all those involved in the promotion of abortion that they will get the grace to see the light.

Some --- like the wildly demented Dublin media -- think that consensus is somehow the equivalent of right and wrong and justification.
Not so! Objective truth does not really care about pop opinion. There are consequences to bad law. And Ireland and these TDs and these enlightened news people will find out.
If it come to euthanasia eventually -- and it will -- the subject of the merits and value of THEIR OWN LIVES will be debated.

the pro abortion bias of the so-called "impartial" Irish "pro-choice" media is obvious. Anti abortion people and families, as consumers should boycott and take their money, support and commercial or personal advertising away from any Irish media (print or broadcast) supporting abortion, especially under the lying "pro choice" mask. They will use your money to drive their ideological abortion agenda. Support prolife groups, and prolife media, with your money and advertising. Identify the abortion pushing "pro choice" journalists who use their media positions to propagandise for the pro abortion agenda. Educate your friends, family, schools and community about the pro abortion ideological campaign of many Irish media careerists. Make sure your children can recognise an abortion pushing journalist or politician when they see or read one. Their media aim is to secularise Ireland, and its schools and youth, suffeciently to accept, ultimately, abortion on demand (as in Britain). Identify and boycott them, their political pals, and their publications at every opportunity.

Disappointing but hardly surprising. RTE has its own rules. I think the only thing that would stop them is if there was a massive boycot of paying the TV licence. after all money talks
Damien Aylward. on Jun 3, 2013 3:19pm
One goes to prison for not paying your TV licence. The Innocents go to death if the pro - aborts have their way. Those promoting abortion go to eternal damnation. I suppose there is Justice in the end.

When you consider that Irish People a generally pro-life; RTE could report more honestly, with little to fear.
RTE's editorial staff were very influenced by socialist worker philosophies. One wonders how they can square the slavery of abortion in their own heads?
Clearly the anti-life lobby are small in number but carry a disproportionate influence in the state supported news agency.

Can't these government officials do SOMETHING besides turn 2,000 years of Christianity on its head? Can't they work on a budget? Get us out of debt? Create some jobs? Bring in new businesses? Improve mass transportation? They really are pathetic and they DON"T listen.

Disgraceful RTE allowing your media to be used by the pro abortion of the deceptive deceitful greedy self serving politicians Irish Government who never kept one promise to the Citizens of Ireland. The news papers media is the same used by the pro abortionist agenda.shamefully, it is not worth the papers it is written on.when they are supposed to be independent not a voice for pro abortion and Dangerous inhuman kill bill of the Irish Government and their PLANS are to remove (1861 ACT) The offenses against the person Act and many unborn babies would be on death row, also then there is nothing to stop even euthanasia or assisted suicide used on elderly and disabled if this Satan driven evil legislation was forced in to Ireland against wishes of our majority of citizens

What about the mockery of Human Rights stood on it's head when many unborn babies become targets are denied their Right to Life and placed on death row if the Government-pro abortion kill bill was ever implemented.
RTE tell me are we paying a license for your promotion of abortion.
Irish Citizen on Jun 7, 2013 4:05pm
Does RTE eat horse meat or is it the mouth piece for the pro abortion International group, if abortion kill bill were ever implemented by this Government, whose inhumanity is to the many unborn babies targets pending -death row Abortion groups could state that catholic majority of Ireland are the model for catholic counties for globe abortions on the grounds of intent of suicide, when we know there never was any evidence by the professional Medical or Psychiatrists experts that abortion benefits mental health,or suicide, facts are it increases suicide risk to health

We have a prime minister of our Nation who says that he is a Roman Catholic, however, he also states that he is NOT a Catholic prime minister. Did anybody else hear of this phenomenon???
MÃchael. on Jun 19, 2013 11:07am
I think what he is trying to get across is he is a Taoiseach for everyone, not just Catholics and he is just going legislate on behalf of the whole country rather than selected groups.
If he was Protestant, Jewish or Hindu then we would expect exactly the same attitude and quite rightly so.
