In response to the article printed on page 3 of the Irish Independent this morning, 18 September, and false allegations made by Nuala Fennell, TD, on Morning Ireland this morning, Youth Defence wish to express their dismay at the ludicrous and incorrect statement and comments made.
Firstly, Youth Defence did not picket Nuala Fennell's home, due to the fact that it was so late. This decision was taken because she lives in a residential area, and we did not wish to disturb any young children, at half-nine in the evening, when they might be in bed.
Secondly, three, and only, three, Youth Defence members buzzed Ms. Fennell on her intercom, and upon being answered, asked "Hello, is Nuala Fennel there?"
She then came to the door and Jennifer Walsh, a seventeen-year-old girl, said to Ms. Fennell, "Hello Nuala, we're representatives of Youth Defence, which is a pro-life organisation, and I would like to present you with a pair of precious feet which are the international pro, "Ah, very nice, thank you", accepting YD's gift. We then thanked her and bade her "good night".
Ms Fennell also tried to create the illusion that we were wearing some form of a black uniform, (which is a falsehood), and said that we were "like something from the Ku Klux Klan or Nazi Germany" , remarks which we find insulting and defamatory and very strange coming from a member of a political party whose associations with the Fascist Blue Shirts is still remembered.
Ms Fennell also stated that a number of members form YD tried to crowd into her house. This is a very serious and utterly false allegation! Perhaps she should remember that people are imprisoned for illegal entry and that she is casting a slur on the idealistic young people of YD.
YD can only presume that Ms. Fennell is deliberately trying to misrepresent the facts, and we are dismayed that a TD would utter such falsehoods on the national airwaves, when are our public representatives going to start representing the truth.
