Youth Defence will place a picket on the Department of Foreign Affairs, today, 11 September at 6.30pm, in protest at the Government's participation in the UN Conference in Beijing.
This conference purports to promote empowerment of women worldwide. It conveniently chooses to ignore that in China, women in general, and unborn women, in particular have no so-called "reproductive rights" at all; forced abortions and sterilizations are still commonplace. It is a fact that the Irish government's participation in this conference serves to add to the credibility gained by the Chinese Authorities in hosting the conference. Youth Defence consider their participation in view of this fact, callous, dangerous but not altogether surprising.
Turning a blind eye to human rights abuses is obviously a small price to pay for yet another junket. The UN document - Platform for Action - seeks to establish abortion as a fundamental right, wilfully ignoring the rights of 28 million unborn women killed every year by abortion. The Irish government would do well to remember that as our representatives they are obliged to adhere to their pro-life mandate.
Attempts at Third World coercion have been a familiar and sinister trademark of the UN population control agenda. Most Third World countries are resisting such coercion. Ireland should be proud to stand in their defence, and in defence of life.
