On Tuesday, 16/2/93, a picket was placed on the offices of the Director of Public Prosecutions by members of Youth Defence in response to a grave and sinister injustice for which the DPP must accept responsibility.
On Saturday, 12/9/92, an eighteen-year-old girl, a member of Youth Defence was was handing out pro-life leaflets on O'Connell Street in Dublin at approximately 3pm. She was suddenly approached by a tall, heavy-set member of the Socialist Workers Movement who, without any provocation, struck her on the face with his fist.
Two completely independent witnesses and approx 15 YD members confirmed this version of events. No retaliation was made and the Gardai were summoned. The girl victim felt that it was necessary to press charges for the assault lest this type of action might recur.
The DPP has refused to uphold the rights of this young woman and has signalled to the aggressor that his violence is acceptable. As a non-violent organisation we demand our right to state protection, that we may continue to uphold the right to life of unborn children.
