While Youth Defence have already re-acted with considerable disappointment to the contents of the Green Paper we were at least pleased that the authors had noted the overwhelming desire of the Irish people for a referendum to completely prohibit abortion. This is a significant admission in an otherwise thoroughly flawed document. There exists no substantial reason why the consideration of another Committee should be required beyond the technical enactment of that wish.
In this context Minister Brian Cowens subsequent comments in relation to the Green Paper, for which he had executive responsibility, raises some serious concerns. His statements on the difficulty of finding a wording has no truth to it and in fact is at odds with the vast majority of submissions. He seems to be relying on the belief that most people will be unaware that a suitable an effective wording has already been presented. If so this is profoundly dishonest and is conduct unbecoming a senior Minister.
These statements and the poor presentation in the Green Paper of the option of completely prohibited abortion can only serve to confuse the issues as they come to the stage of White Paper preparation. Any attempt to foist legalised abortion in an atmosphere of artificial confusion is to be vehemently rejected.
Youth Defence have therefore presented Brian Cowen with a detailed and considered response to his Commitees document and have chosen to do it directly so that the Minister may be reminded of his responsibilities. No amount of evasion can change the nature of abortion, which is the deliberate murder of unborn children, and no amount of confusion can distract from the fact that the Government already has the clearest means to deal with it.
Specifically Brian Cowen should distance himself from the obscure ramblings of the Green Paper and declare his personal recommendation as Minster for Health that the only option that is acceptable is one which protects the right to life of Mother and Child is this country.
We look forward to a positive response by the Minister
