Despite that the source of the alleged abortion figures (which were released yesterday) are the abortion clinics themselves and therefore come from a grossly unreliable origin, Youth Defence welcome a decline in figures numbers even if it comes from invented statistics.
Spokesperson Mr. Eoghan De Faoite said today, "Firstly I would like to acknowledge that every single abortion is a tragedy of immeasurable dimension and Youth Defence has never taken an apethetic view with regard to those that do take place. However these statistics are compiled using information supplied by the abortion clinics themselves. There is no independent means of varifying whether those who are giving Irish addresses are, in fact, ordinarily resident in Ireland, nor more importantly, is there any means of verifying whether the clinics are telling the truth."
Youth Defence believe that since these statistics have proved to be a powerful propaganda weapon in the campaign to have abortion legalised in Ireland, the clinics have a vested interest in lying. The truth is that we cannot know the real numbers. It is noteworthy however that even in their own claim; the Irish abortion rate would be considerably lower than that of England or Wales. There is no doubt that the law has an important educative role to play in maintaining the PRO-life ethos and it is a statement of where we stand as a society.
Youth Defence condemn the efforts of abortion agency the Irish Family Planning Association to try and cloud this decrease by saying more women are travelling to the continent for abortions. They should be ashamed that they couldn't even accept that there is a decrease in the fabricated figures.
Eoghan De Faoite concluded, "Is it that hard for Catherine Heaney to accept that there could ever be a degree of fluctuation in these exaggerated figures? When the figures are high we see the shameless gloating of the IFPA and other abortion agencies. When the figures are lower they begin to make excuses for the decrease."
Youth Defence believes that an honest independent study of the real Irish abortion rate and it's causes should be undertaken and would be more effective than the naive acceptance of invented statistics
