The Irish people have rejected the Government's proposal for limited abortion in Ireland. The result was welcomed by several pro-life people including Justin Barrett of the Mother and Child Campaign and MEP Dana Rosemary Scallion.
The Mother and Child campaign had from the onset of this campaign urged Irish people to vote No to the Governments proposed amendment, which, among other things, left human embryos prior to implantation without legal protection. A spokesperson for the pro-life group spoke earlier today "The Irish people have answered this call."
"The rejection of this amendment is the rejection of limited abortion. It is also the rejection of Irish tax-paid abortions in England."
After persistent threats of liberal abortion the Taoiseach Bertie Ahern has admitted that people with varying views voted no to the amendment.
The Mother and Child campaign are heartened at the result, "nothing has changed... this amendment, if accepted, would have been a step backwards for the pro-life cause." The Mother and Child campaign will, no doubt, continue to fight for full legal protection for Irish unborn children and mothers.
Youth Defence member voiced her group's feelings, "We wanted a proper referendum for so long, but we would not be bullied into accepting something which was inadequate."
Taoiseach Bertie Ahern looked visibly shaken as he conceded defeat.
