Youth Defence today welcomed the No vote to the Government abortion proposal and said it was wholly unbelieveable for pro-abortion campaigners to claim that the No vote was an endorsement of the X case judgement.
Charles Byrne, the National Organiser, for the organisation, acknowledged the tremendous work done by pro-life activists throughout the country in explaining the flaws from a pro-life perspective in the Government’s proposal. And he warned the Labour Party leader Ruairi Quinn, against legislating for the X case without a mandate from the Irish people. The majority of Irish people want to protect human life from conception to natural death and an undemocratic attempt to manipulate yesterday’s rejection of the abortion amendment would be vigorously opposed.
Yesterday’s referendum result showed the futility of offering another referendum which did not offer the electorate the opportunity to absolutely ban abortion. In fact the Government’s proposal was a re-run of the 1992 referendum which was also rejected by the people. As opinion polls and referendum results have consistently shown, a substantial majority of Irish people wish to see the unborn child constitutionally protected. It is our belief that, despite their bluster, the political parties realise that legalising abortion against the wishes of the pro-life majority would be tantemount to political suicide.
Youth Defence will continue to publicly identify those who wish to legalise the murder of Irish babies.
