Youth Defence today criticised abortion fanatic Ms Ivana Bacik and the tiny fringe group the Alliance for Choice for their demand for "a more liberal approach to the issue of abortion." This call comes despite Ms Baciks own acknowledgement in the July edition of Magill magazine that her desire to see abortion being widely available in Ireland is not one shared by the majority of the Irish people.
Eoghan de Faoite, Chairperson of Youth Defence said today, "I find it wholly outrageous that this barely existent group would have the audacity to override the wishes of the Irish people and call for the liberalisation of abortion in Ireland. The Alliance for Choice need to learn to understand the workings of a democracy and respect the wishes of the electorate who continually reject abortion, instead of trying to force their own liberal agenda."
Youth Defence also today congratulate the Irish people for having allowed the most recent generation of Irish unborn the gift of life without facing the immediate threat of abortion in Ireland. The Eight Amendment, which was inserted into the Irish constitution on 5th September 1983, has meant that this generation of Irish children have not faced the prospect of imminent death through abortion in Ireland.
In relation to this Mr De Faoite said; "The referendum in 1983 was the last time the Irish people got a clear cut opportunity to vote yes or no to legal abortion. As this referendum was passed by a two to one majority it is clear that the intent of the Irish people at the time was to protect all unborn life", he added, "I applaud the Irish people who voted to protect human life in 1983. The enacting of this amendment has ensured that for the last 20 years Ireland has remained a safe haven for mothers and babies."
Despite repeated attacks on the unborn since 1983, including numerous court challenges, and referenda proposed by the Governments of the time to weaken the legal protection for the Irish unborn, the Irish people have remained steadfast in their commitment to protect Life. Most recently, in March of last year, the Government again tried to hoodwink the Irish people into inserting into our Constitution an amendment to lessen the existing legal protection for Irish unborn. Youth Defence commend the Irish people for not yielding to this blackmail and instead voting to retain the existing protection for Irish unborn children.
Eoghan de Faoite concluded; "It is my certain belief that the opposition of Irish people to abortion remains as solid now as it was in 1983. The ongoing campaigns of Youth Defence over the past 12 years have served to ensure that there will always be a pro-life majority in this country."
Youth Defence, in the very near future, intend to ensure that the Irish people are made aware of the unrepresentative and undemocratic nature of Alliance for Choice.
