The Union of Students of Ireland Welfare Officer, Layne Aston’s has issued a press release on USI’s website recently which launched a scathing attack on the pro-life counseling group, Life while alternatively advising our nation's students to view websites of pro-abortion organizations such as the IFPA and Planned Parenthood.
She criticised Life for not highlighting information favouring abortion. She said, “One of the most galling aspects of this organisation is that they claim: "We do not offer, recommend or refer for abortions or abortifacients, but we are committed to offering accurate information about abortion procedures and risks."
It is wrong for an organisation to give such a one-sided view of any medical procedure. Either provide all the information or none at all, all these actions serve to do is introduce further confusion for women who are seeking the facts before making what in many cases is one of the most important decisions of their lives.”
Her assertions portray an obvious bias in favour of abortion, to add another example would be her statement that “among the many inaccuracies contained on the site is the claim of a link between abortion and breast cancer.” For your information out of the 33 epidemiological studies that have been carried out worldwide on the abortion-breast cancer link, 27 of them found a positive connection. So in fact it is not an “inaccuracy”, but the truth and I would hope USI would favour the truth.
The unfortunate reality is that women can and do suffer greatly after an abortion. Some of them have even died. This is an undisputable fact, abortion is cited as the cause of death on the death certificates of these women. Surely USI would agree that this is important information and should be made known to all women contemplating abortion. Life does highlight the fact that abortion can be dangerous, however the IFPA and Planned Parenthood which Layne Aston is promoting offers no such information. Wouldn’t this then be “one-sided”, the very thing she claims Life to be?
It is highly inappropriate for a USI officer to openly promote abortion. USI have absolutely no mandate in advocating abortion as they have never taken any referendums in the universities to determine the students’ views on this issue. As USI is representative of the student body it is imperative that USI refrain from aligning themselves with pro-abortion groupings such as the IFPA and Planned Parenthood.
