PR: Parents distressed at Judge's Decision

28.11.1997

Youth Defence rejects totally the outrageous judgement of Mr. Justice Geoghegan delivered in the High Court today which affirmed that the 13-year-old girl at the centre of recent controversy would now travel to England for an abortion.

From beginning to end this case proceeded not in accordance with accepted rules of law and evidence but rather with a very clear political agenda and that agenda was to legalise abortion in Ireland. The judgement itself was wrong in law and in fact, and as a Fianna Fail nominee Mr. Justice Geoghegan reveals the obvious problems with political nature of judicial appointments.

It was never clear nor is it clear now that the girl herself wanted the abortion. We have to take the word of thoroughly discredited sources such as the Eastern Health Board and their appointed psychologists. The parents were denied access to their daughter from the moment they decided against the abortion and from that time onwards they were subjected to a steady stream of unwarranted abuse even in the judgement itself.

Clearly now our thoughts are with the family who are heartbroken at their daughter who was wrenched from their arms into the hands of a faceless state agency; to the girl herself who is without the people who love her at this terrible time; and to her unborn child who is now to be tortured to death in an English abortion clinic.

It is a very sad day for Ireland to have taken, with the collusion of a variety of State agencies, a major step on the road to the culture of death.
