In their ongoing refusal to grant the Irish people a Pro-Life Referendum, certain political elements within and without the Government, have sought to hide behind the alleged difficulty in formulating a wording which would protect both mother and child. Youth Defence have always known this to be profoundly dishonest, and in its recent submission to the Government Green Paper on Abortion, provided a clear and unambiguous wording which would achieve the wishes of the people to totally prohibit abortion.
We are however aware, that those elements will continue to hide behind that dishonest smokescreen, and therefore it is a matter of profound importance that the general public become familiar with the need for a properly worded Pro-Life Amendment. With that in mind we are inaugurating the "Right Words Campaign" which is designed to ensure that our proposed wording for a referendum become as widely known as possible.
The Campaign will take the form of widespread Bill Board advertising throughout the country beginning on Tuesday 6th April 1998. In conjunction with this we will be making available to the public a booklet which explains in the clearest way the issues involved, and why this wording will achieve the protection of mother and child which the Irish people so earnestly desire. Further to this will be included a brief leaflet, again explaining the issues, which we expect eventually to reach at least one in five households. Six mobile teams of activists will carry the message across the country.
At this time confusion is the great enemy of truth and the danger is that in the midst of that confusion the wrong wording may be proposed and accepted. Youth Defence will be concentrating in the coming months in putting forward in the strongest possible way, that not just any wording can be or will be enough. We need the right words, the right words for Irish mothers and the right words for our unborn children.
