Youth Defence express deep concern for the welfare of an eastern European woman, and her unborn child as she seeks permission to leave Ireland for the purposes of procuring an abortion. This woman is living in Cork and is carrying a baby of 12 weeks, as reported in today’s Irish Times. In a statement spokesperson for Youth Defence, Mr. Eoghan De Faoite said; “It is my view that abortion is not in the best interests of this woman. There are other more positive, life affirming alternatives to abortion that need to be promoted and encouraged if we are to truly look after the welfare of this lady and her unborn child.”
Youth Defence would also seriously question the motivation of both Gertrude Cotter of the Irish Immigrant Support Centre in Cork and Cabrini Gibbons of the Irish Refugee Council whose comments in today’s paper would suggest that they believe that having an abortion would solve this lady’s problems. We would remind Ms. Cotter and Ms Gibbons that there are two individuals involved in this situation, the mother and their baby, and both of them need to be cared for.
An unborn child at 10 weeks already has a heart beat, a nervous system and even finger nails. This child is human and very much alive and should have an absolute right to life. Nothing can justify the killing of this unique individual no matter it takes place. Youth Defence would call on whoever is in contact with this woman to offer her real information on abortion so that she is made aware of what exactly her child looks like and what abortion will do to her child and to her body.
Eoghan De Faoite added, “Abortion is an act of violence that kills a baby. Whether it’s carried out here in Ireland or in Britain or in this woman’s native country the end result would be exactly the same – a dead baby and, most likely, a harmed woman.”
